Art Law in Venice: a discipline that requires specialisation
Art law Venice is my main area of expertise. The art market is a complex world, where sales, authenticity of works, copyright and liability intersect with national and international regulations in constant evolution. I have been practising art law for over twenty years, with a background built at the most prestigious international institutions in the field. I work from Venice — one of the world’s art capitals — assisting clients in Italy and abroad at every stage of their relationship with the artistic and cultural world. My experience allows me to offer concrete, up-to-date advice focused on the client’s objectives.
Art law is not only about major transactions or high-profile cases of stolen works. It also covers the contract with the gallery exhibiting your work, the rights to photographs of your pieces, the management of an inherited collection, or the loan of a work to a foreign museum. Areas of practice
Sale and purchase of artworks — contracts, due diligence, provenance and authenticity checks. I assist buyers and sellers in private transactions, auctions and dealings with galleries and auction houses, ensuring the protection of all parties’ interests.
Copyright and intellectual property — protection of artists’ moral and economic rights, licences, publishing and reproduction contracts. I also handle protection against forgery and plagiarism, and the management of the artist’s resale right.
Restitution and recovery of works — cultural property unlawfully exported or stolen, international restitution procedures. I assist private individuals, institutions and governments in recovery proceedings, both through litigation and diplomatic negotiations.
Contracts with museums and institutions — loans, exhibitions, donations, sponsorship agreements. I draft and negotiate complex contracts between cultural institutions, artists and private parties, protecting the interests of all involved.
Successions and private collections — succession planning, donations, asset management of art collections. I assist collectors and their families in the enhancement and transfer of artistic heritage.
Liability and damages — damage to works during transport, exhibition or restoration. I manage compensation proceedings against carriers, insurers and restorers.
Mediation and arbitration — out-of-court resolution of disputes in the artistic and cultural sector. I am qualified as a mediator and arbitrator and favour swift and effective solutions wherever possible.
My experience – Art Law Lawyer Venice
I am a lecturer in art law at IED – Istituto Europeo di Design in Venice and Florence, and I collaborate with the Institute of Art and Law (IAL) in the United Kingdom, which publishes my articles on Italian case law in the field. I am a speaker at international art law conferences both in Italy and abroad, and I hold the Diploma in Intellectual Property and Collections from the IAL in London, and have attended the art law course at the Sotheby’s Institute of Art.
I founded my practice in Venice in 2004. Over the years I have assisted major museums, national and international art galleries, artists, cultural foundations and private collectors.
